This was a fun read. We pick up only a few months after the events of book 1, but instead of New York Emery is in Seattle trying to make things work with his boyfriend while investigating paranormal (or incarnate) activity with his partner Rachel. However, as expected with Mr. Luple, trouble is never far away, and when a tech giant CEO is murdered, Emery quickly deduces that something supernatural is afoot.Five Positives:-This story is jam-packed with action. Emery is constantly running from goons, getting into gunfights and car chases, trespassing, etc.-Again, Schuelke knocks it out of the park with his attention to detail and descriptions. Seattle is depicted beautifully, and the descriptions are so clear and specific that I really felt I was in the city and not just some generic locale.-Picking up from the last novel, the romance between Caden and Emery is at the forefront. I enjoyed their relationship, and Schuelke worked to give Caden more motivation and goals than in the last novel. He’s still one of the weakest aspects of the story, but I liked him more here.-Schuelke must know some awesome women because once again the female characters steal the show. Since Rachelle’s leg isn’t broken, she gets a ton more screen time and she is awesome in every scene. However, we also meet a whole slew of new female characters, some mysterious, some tragic, and some understandably villainous.-There is a decent murder mystery here and some twists that while not as good as book one, were still interesting. Like book one, I wasn’t quite sure what was going to happen next.One Negative:-This could be a case of sequel-itis, but I was so engrossed with the concept of incarnates. In Book One Schuelke showed us a wide variety of mythological creatures from the Genie to the Headless Horseman. This novel takes a much more modern approach with its mythological creatures. Yes, we begin the novel with the Mermaid, but the other “mythological” beings in this story didn’t feel very mythic to me. Slight spoiler….with so many myths to choose from, I guess I was disappointed that we were focusing on entities like “The Android”.Though not as good as book one, I still enjoyed Loophole Ex Machina. Plus, Schuelke sets up a massive paradigm shift with huge ramifications for future titles. So, I’m still excited to see where he takes this story in future titles. Emery’s story continues in this book that keeps you engaged and turning page after page. The author has created a world that is exciting, intriguing, and most of all gripping, each chapter leaves you wanting more. The characters and their relationships are believable, and as the reader you feel like you get to know them as your own best friends.As the story continues, the suspense and unpredictable twists bring to bear the much larger scope of the world of Incarnates and I can only sit and eagerly wait for the next book to read the next adventure!
