I absolutely loved the Vawdrey brothers series, so I was excited to read more, but this set of books totally misses the mark.There's a difference between brash alpha with a secret heart of gold and a misogynistic ass--this book and the first one are far too much in the latter column. The main conflict of the book is: kind female protagonist continually being mistreated and essentially begging the male character to love her or even be nice.So the fantasy is a woman has to drag a man kicking and screaming into falling in love/being a decent romantic partner? Not exactly what I'm looking for in a fun romantic read. Honestly just kind of sad to see the female character reduced to walking on egg shells and expecting nothing from the man in her life. Just awful. I read this book on Friday the 13th as I sat for over 7 hours in a crammed surgery waiting room. Added to the expected worry about a loved one having a tricky procedure was the sound of the throng of people around me sniffling and coughing, with no apparent concessions for an ongoing pandemic by the hospital.I can't tell you how much I wanted to escape--and I did. This book took me to medieval Karadok and kept me there quite contentedly.The Karadok novels are a mixture of interesting characters and sex--lots and lots of sex. This book seemed to have an overload of sexual material. I guess that is because the story features Lenora, the reigning court beauty, who loses her loveliness when a horrifying near-death experience changes her life and priorities. She weds Garman, a taciturn, misanthropic knight, to escape from pitying family and friends.Rather than the usual host of lively side stories, the plot mainly concerns Lenora and Garman getting to know each other.There are not as many terrific secondary characters and sub-plots as usual and I kept wanting to stop the action to follow some of the other characters because they were more interesting than what was going on in the bedroom. Who, for instance, was the itinerant fortune teller dressed in bright, multi-colored rags? I wanted to follow that mysterious figure around for a while. What is Berta doing when she goes AWOL at the end of the story? What adventures do the ragamuffin squires have when we aren't looking at them and they head off to get into trouble like ants to a picnic basket?However, the book kept me from standing up in a crowded waiting room, screaming and tossing old magazines around, and that's what counts.
